Sasae-au Yoga Practice Pathway
This journey offers time to gently connect —
with your own body,
and with another person,
slowly and with care.
And over time, within your community,
new encounters may quietly begin to blossom—
carrying with them a quiet, unfolding sense of possibility.

🟢 Stage 0: そっと、となりにいる (Sotto, Tonari ni Iru) – Quiet Togetherness
Sasae-au Yoga is a practice where people connect physically, cultivating trust and warmth. But the first step in this journey begins with simply “gently being next to.” This stage is a time when there’s no physical contact yet. Slowly, as you focus on your own breath and movements, you’ll quietly cultivate the comfort and peace of mind that comes from someone being nearby.
As outlined in our important “5 Agreements,” all physical interactions take place based on mutual agreement and dialogue. Here, the choice “not to touch” is also a valued and respected form of communication. For those who may feel a little unsure about touch, or if this is your first time in a place like this, please feel completely at ease. Start by just “being there, without strain.”
Making eye contact, synchronizing your breath, feeling the atmosphere around you— even these small actions are already the beginning of a connection.
This stage is a preparatory time for gently starting physical contact. During the class, while observing the participants’ comfort, we will progress to the next stage (Fureai Yoga / Touch Yoga) with those who wish to. We’ll guide you gently, so you can take a step forward when you feel, “Maybe I’d like to try.”

🟢 Stage 1: ふれあいヨガ (Fureai Yoga) – Connection Yoga
Within gentle contact, a sense of safety grows.
Partner yoga, exploration of sharing and supporting weight in no-lift floor-based interaction.
Fureai Yoga offers the first steps exploring partner connection. This is a floor-based standing practice where each person primarily supports their own weight, and begins to explore contact and sharing and supporting weight within safe, defined boundaries. The principles of mutual support and counterbalance are gently introduced.
The practice emphasizes sensing and adjusting to shifts in weight and pressure, from light touch to simple leans. This practice provides opportunities to explore what it feels like to offer and to receive support, and ways to shift and hold your own weight, and your partner’s weight. Practicing together, listening to your own body, listening to your partner, this quiet yet profound experience builds trust and connection.

🟡 Stage 2: ひらくヨガ (Hiraku Yoga) – Opening / Expanding / Beginning Yoga
A quiet check-in, a gentle lift, a heart begins to open.。
Coming up from floor-based mutual support to gentle, to completely supported poses with spotters. A taste of flying, further opportunities to explore balance, observation, care and communication.
For many of us, the experience of being physically supported by another person is quietly surprising — and deeply moving. We spend most of our lives carrying ourselves. But what might we discover when we let someone support us, just a little?
In this stage, we begin exploring gentle lifts with the support of spotters and clear, caring communication.
“Shall we try this?” “Is this okay so far?” — we check in gently as we go, feeling into balance, timing, and trust.
With a little guidance and encouragement, the body begins to lift. A subtle shift — a moment of lightness.
And suddenly:
“Oh… maybe I can do this.”
Smiles and laughter arise not from effort or performance, but from a sense of emotional ease — the quiet joy of being supported, and of supporting in return. It’s a time when the heart, the body, and even the imagination begin to open.
Not all at once.
Just a little.
But in a way that stays with you.

🟠 Stage 3 – 軽やかヨガ (Karoyaka Yoga) – Graceful / Light Yoga
As you breathe, lightness develops.
Bridging the gap from ひらくヨガ to アクロヨガ, this stage offers a chance to deepen confidence in movement and balance through gently challenging flows.Karoyaka—lightness, grace, ease—isn’t something you need to have, but something we nurture together through steady practice and mutual support.
Building on the experiences of the previous stages, this is where we begin to refine the movement and communication skills that make AcroYoga feel light, stable, and alive.
“Poses” introduced in the previous stage are now linked together to form “Flows,” with smooth, intentional transitions. Instruction is provided not only on how to succeed, but also how to fall and reset safely.
As movements become more dynamic, the role of the spotter becomes essential — not just as a guardian of safety, but as an active, supportive presence. Here, safety, communication, and consent remain core, as participants explore their limits gently, respectfully, and together.
You’ll practice entering and exiting poses with clarity and care, listening to your body and your partner, and offering support calmly and confidently.
The experience of flow begins to emerge — not because everything is new, but because you are becoming more attuned, responsive, and connected.

🔴 Stage 4 – アクロヨガ – AcroYoga
When trust becomes movement, expression becomes free.
Equipped with the tools of self-awareness, care for your partner, open communication, and empathy, this is where a full expression of Acroyoga can begin.
By this stage, you’ve come to know how to listen to your own body, how to care for your partner, and how to move together with trust. With these foundations, AcroYoga begins to unfold in a new way — as a shared expression of strength, balance, and joy.
It’s not about doing something impressive. It’s about co-creating movement that feels free, present, and connected. Whether with familiar partners or new ones, you begin to sense how this practice can carry you beyond yourself — into new forms of communication, shared rhythm, and lightness.
And sometimes, without effort, a small spark appears: a moment where you feel 共に動くことの美しさ — the beauty of moving together.

Where should I start?
How we differentiate Stages in the Sasae-au Yoga Pathway is described below. These have been developed to provide experiences to speak to different levels of comfort and preference for each individual. We recognize and respect that every person has had a unique pathway through life, and that this has shaped who they are today. You are welcome to stay at whatever Stage you are comfortable for as long as you like, and you are always welcome to observe a class at a different level to see if that is something you would like to try.
Not sure where to start? We’ll help you find a stage that feels right—honoring your pace and comfort.
There’s no wrong place to begin. Please feel free to reach out anytime.
